Transitioning to Mainstream School

A confident start to the next chapter.

Moving on to mainstream school is an exciting milestone in a child’s early years journey. At Bilingual Day Nurseries, we understand that this transition is about much more than preparing children academically – it is about helping them feel confident, independent, and emotionally ready to embrace a new environment.

We take a nurturing, child-centred approach to ensure every child feels supported as they take this important next step.

01

Preparing Children for School

Throughout their time with us, we encourage children to develop the skills they need to thrive in a mainstream school setting. Through play-based learning, meaningful experiences, and positive relationships, we support the development of:

Independence and self-confidence – encouraging children to make choices, manage their belongings, and take pride in their achievements.

Communication and language – developing listening, speaking, and comprehension skills in both English and Spanish, helping children express themselves and communicate with confidence.

Social and emotional development – learning to share, cooperate, build friendships, manage emotions, and develop resilience.

Early literacy and numeracy – nurturing a love of books, stories, numbers, problem-solving, and discovery through engaging, age-appropriate activities.

Concentration and curiosity – encouraging children to ask questions, explore new ideas, follow routines, and develop a positive attitude towards learning.

02

Independence at the Heart of Our Curriculum

At Bilingual Day Nurseries, independence is at the heart of our curriculum. We believe that preparing children for mainstream school goes far beyond academic learning; it is about giving them the confidence, resilience, and practical life skills to thrive in a new environment.

From an early age, we encourage children to take an active role in their daily routines, make their own choices, solve problems, and develop the confidence to try things for themselves. Whether putting on their own shoes, managing their belongings, expressing their needs, or working collaboratively with their peers, every small achievement helps build the foundations for a successful transition to school.

Our approach empowers children to become capable, curious, and self-assured learners who are willing to explore, embrace challenges, and approach new experiences positively. Combined with our bilingual environment, this supports the development of confident communicators who are comfortable expressing themselves and engaging with the world around them.

The results speak for themselves. We have received very positive feedback from our feeder schools, who have commented on how independent and advanced our children are compared with other pupils joining their classrooms. This feedback reinforces our belief that nurturing independence from the earliest years makes a meaningful difference to children’s readiness for school.

By placing independence at the centre of our curriculum, we aim to ensure that every child leaves our nursery not only ready for the academic expectations of mainstream school, but also equipped with the confidence, self-reliance, and enthusiasm to flourish from day one.

We don’t simply prepare children to start school – we help them develop the skills and confidence to thrive once they get there.

The Benefits of a Bilingual Foundation

Our bilingual environment helps children develop an appreciation for languages and different cultures from an early age. Exposure to English and Spanish supports communication, cultural awareness, and confidence in expressing ideas across different contexts.

We celebrate each child’s individual language journey, recognising that children develop at different rates and may have different levels of confidence in each language. Our aim is to help every child feel understood, included, and ready to communicate in their new school environment.

04

Supporting a Smooth Transition

We know that starting school can bring a mixture of excitement and uncertainty for both children and families. That is why we place great importance on emotional well-being and preparing children for change in a positive, reassuring way.

Where possible, we help children become familiar with school routines, talk about what to expect, practise everyday skills, and approach new experiences with confidence. We also work in partnership with families, sharing guidance and practical ideas to help create continuity between nursery and home.

Working in Partnership with Your Child’s New School

We believe that every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and confident as they take their next big step into mainstream school. That is why we work closely with your child’s new school to ensure their transition is as smooth, positive, and reassuring as possible.

We liaise directly with your child’s feeder school to arrange a visit to our nursery, giving their future teachers the opportunity to meet your little one in a familiar and comfortable environment.

During this visit, we provide a detailed handover with your child’s key worker, sharing valuable insights into their personality, interests, strengths, individual needs, and preferred ways of learning. We also share your child’s learning journey through Famly, ensuring their new school has a clear picture of their development, progress, and achievements.

This helps create continuity between nursery and school, allowing their new teachers to build on the foundations already established and provide the right support from the very beginning.

06

Additional Support for Children Who Need It

We recognise that some children may need a little extra support, time, and reassurance when preparing for such a significant change. If we identify that your child may find the transition particularly challenging, we will explore the availability of transition funding through the local council to help provide additional support.

Where funding is available and arrangements can be agreed, we will work to organise several visits to your child’s new school before their official start date, accompanied by their familiar nursery key worker.

These visits allow your little one to gradually become familiar with their new surroundings, meet their future teachers, and begin building confidence in their new environment, with the reassurance of a trusted adult by their side.

Our aim is to make the move from nursery to school as individualised and supportive as possible, recognising that every child’s journey is different.

Starting school should be an exciting new adventure, not an overwhelming one. We are committed to working alongside families and schools to give every child the best possible start to this next chapter.

Choosing Home Education? We’re Here to Support You

We understand that every family’s educational journey is different, and mainstream school is not the right choice for every child. If you decide to home educate your little one, we can continue to support your family as you navigate this alternative approach to learning.

Your child can remain at nursery until they reach compulsory school age (five), allowing them to continue benefiting from our nurturing environment, bilingual curriculum, social interactions, and opportunities to develop independence and confidence.

Once your child reaches compulsory school age, you can take responsibility for their education at home while they continue to enjoy our home education enrichment sessions. These sessions provide valuable opportunities to socialise with other children, explore new interests, develop practical skills, and take part in engaging activities within a supportive bilingual environment.

Our enrichment sessions are designed to complement your home education approach, offering additional experiences and social opportunities while you remain responsible for planning and delivering your child’s education.

We believe that learning takes many forms, and our aim is to work in partnership with families to provide children with opportunities to grow, explore, and flourish, whatever their educational pathway.

Working Together for Every Child

Every child’s journey is unique. We take the time to recognise individual strengths, interests, and needs, ensuring that children are supported at their own pace.

Whether your child transitions to mainstream school or follows a home education pathway, our focus remains the same: building strong foundations in independence, communication, relationships, and a lifelong love of learning.

Our goal is simple: to help every child feel ready to take their next big step, equipped with the skills, confidence, and positive experiences to flourish.
