Key Person System

Persona de referencia

At Bilingual Day Nurseries, we understand that strong, secure relationships are the foundation of a child’s happiness, confidence and success. We place great importance on building positive attachments and creating a nurturing environment where every child feels safe, valued and understood.

When your child joins our nursery, they will be assigned a Key Person who will be their main source of support throughout their nursery journey and your primary point of contact.

We begin building this relationship before your child’s first day through a home visit, carried out by a member of the management team and your child’s Key Person.

The home visit gives us the opportunity to get to know your child in the place where they feel most comfortable and secure. It allows us to learn about their interests, routines and personality, while helping your child become familiar with the adults who will be caring for them. By starting to build these relationships before your child even steps through our doors, we can make the transition into nursery much smoother and more reassuring.

During the visit, your child will receive a special settling-in gift from their Key Person and will be introduced to our nursery uniform. Children are encouraged to keep their gift and bring it with them when they start nursery, helping to create a familiar link between home and nursery and providing comfort during the settling-in process.

Throughout the first days and weeks, your child’s Key Person will spend time building a strong bond with them, helping them feel secure, confident and ready to explore their new environment. We recognise that every child is unique and settles at their own pace, so we work closely with families to ensure the experience is tailored to each child’s individual needs.

We actively encourage parents to be involved in the settling-in process and welcome children and families to take the time they need to feel comfortable and confident. Open communication and strong partnerships with parents are at the heart of everything we do.

Our open-door policy means that parents can speak to their child’s Key Person or a member of the management team whenever they need to. We continually monitor children’s relationships and attachments within nursery and, if a child naturally develops a particularly strong bond with another practitioner, we will always consider their needs and adjust key person arrangements where appropriate.

Our aim is for every child to feel safe, secure, confident and happy, giving them the emotional foundation they need to explore, learn, build friendships and reach their full potential.

Preguntas frecuentes

Key Person FAQs

If you require any further information, please don’t hesitate to ask us.

What is a key person?

A key person is a dedicated practitioner who takes special responsibility for building a close, trusting relationship with your child and family. They help your child feel safe, secure and settled while supporting their individual learning, development and emotional wellbeing.

Why is having a key person important for my child?

Children learn best when they feel safe, understood and valued. A consistent relationship with their key person helps them develop a sense of belonging, build confidence and feel comfortable exploring their environment. This secure foundation supports their learning, friendships and independence.

How does the key person help my child settle into nursery?

Your child’s key person works closely with you to understand their routines, interests, comfort needs and personality. They support the settling-in process at a pace appropriate for your child, offering reassurance, familiar routines and positive interactions to help them develop confidence in their new surroundings.

How will my child’s key person keep me informed about their progress?

Your child’s key person works in partnership with you, sharing information about their experiences, achievements, interests and developmental progress. They welcome your knowledge and observations from home, helping to create a joined-up approach that supports your child’s individual needs and next steps.

Will my child only be cared for by their key person?

No. While your child’s key person has a special responsibility for their care, development and wellbeing, all practitioners work together as a team to ensure your child receives consistent, nurturing support. This helps children build positive relationships with other familiar adults while maintaining the security of their key person relationship.

Do I get a key worker?

Yes. Your child will be assigned a key worker before they start.

If you are unhappy with your key worker, please speak to management and changes can be put into place.

You will meet your child’s key worker on your home visit.

Will I get to see photos of my child and what they have been doing?

Yes. Daily update photos will be uploaded to Famly and you will also receive more photos from their week at nursery.

When you first join the nursery, you will be emailed a login directly from Famly and can set your own password.

Through Famly, you can see observations about your child and information about their food, drink, sleep and toileting. Parents are also encouraged to upload their own photos and stories to share learning from home.

Every 6 weeks, you will receive a more detailed written observation about your child’s progress and current next steps.

Every 6 months, you will receive a progress update for your child.

How will I know what they have eaten?

We upload information about your child’s food, drink, sleep and toileting onto their daily diary on Famly.

Do you have parents’ evenings?

We hold parents’ evenings twice a year. This is an opportunity to sit down with your child’s key worker and discuss their development and any concerns you may have.

We also have an open-door policy. If you would like a meeting with the nursery manager, your child’s key worker or our SENDCO at any time, please let us know. You do not need to wait for parents’ evening.
